TOM BARRY T.D. CALLS FOR EXTENSIONS FOR FERTILISERS AND SLURRY
DEPUTY Tom Barry is urging farmers to speak with the Revenue Commissioners if they are concerned about meeting their Preliminary Tax obligations.
“Over 11,000 farmers were in receipt of Farm Assist last year – which was a relatively good year for Agriculture. Farmers are in serious difficulty this year. Now, they have to try and fund a substantial tax bill and it’s going to be difficult for them.
“I would urge people who are in difficulty to not bury their heads in the sand in relation to the issue of tax. Speak to the Revenue Commissioners because there are options available, including payment plans, and they will work with you to come to a solution. Don’t panic; but do talk to the relevant officials.
“This was an exceptionally bad year for farming. The high cost of inputs was bad enough; but the weather has compounded the situation and means that many farmers will have worked this past 12 months for a loss. However, we can only hope that this was a once-off.”
