Major Roads Allocation

Major Roads Allocation

DEPUTY Tom Barry has warmly welcomed additional roads funding for Cork of nearly €8m, announced today as part of the Government’s Jobs Initiative. Cork has received by far the largest allocation in a package, which nationally provides an additional €60m for the Regional and Local Roads Investment Programme.

The funding is provided under the Restoration Improvement Programme, under which County Councils have submitted a three year programme (for the period 2011 – 2013) identifying the roads most in need of improvement in their area.   The additional funding being provided under the Initiative will enable local authorities to bring forward works on roads which were not scheduled to take place until 2012.  The funding will bring about an improvement in the condition of approximately 650km of regional and local roads at 554 different locations throughout the country.

Deputy Barry said: “It is expected that, nationally, in the region of 1,000 jobs will be created through this investment in our rural roads infrastructure. This is a major investment in our roads and I am particularly pleased at the considerable allocation that Cork has received. The size of Cork’s allocation is in line with the vast network of roads in our county and is very welcome after years of Cork receiving one of the lowest per km allocations in the country from the previous government.

“This is exactly the kind of positive investment that we need to continue with our infrastructural improvements and, at the same time, provide real and desperately needed employment opportunities at a local level.”
